Henry Holden Presents:

"The Misconceptions Continue" How The Media Represents People With Disabilities"

The population of the United States gets its perception of people with disabilities from family, friends, environment and the media.  This lecture/slide presentation focuses on how images in the media mold and distort this perception.

There are over 54 million people with disabilities in this country, a population that represents a buying power of over 700 billion dollars.  According to the Annenberg School of Communication, however, the American public only views people with disabilities 1.5% of the time.  Since the average household watches television an average of 6.5 hours a day, it is easy to see how the media manipulates us.

Henry has not only been a vocal advocate of this issue for twenty years, but a physical presence as well, speaking through both print and electronic media all over the country and, in March 2000, Henry had the pleasure of speaking to students in the United Kingdom.

The audience of this program will come away with a healthier viewpoint concerning people with disabilities and will no longer give in to misconceptions and stereotypes.
