What and Who is DIMEDisability in Media Everywhere (DIME) is an advocacy organization with one mission - to increase the representation of actors with disabilities in all areas of the mass media. As you know, film, television and theater play an enormous role in molding attitudes toward people with disabilities. We have chosen the symbol of the 'dime' to represent the spirit of our organization. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose image is memorialized on the dime, had the vision and the courage to lead America out of a time of great despair. Not only did he change the course of America's economic growth, he did so as an individual with a disability. Many people believe that litigation is the only answer to improving opportunities for people with disabilities. DIME, however, believes there is better way. We believe in working with, not against, those in decision-making positions. DIME needs your help to make our mission of inclusion a reality. We encourage you to write letters to the Networks and Studios. The character with the disability need not be the focal point or leading character of a film or television program. We believe the 'American Scene' can and should speak for itself through the usage of actors with disabilities as part of every day society ... husbands, wives, lawyers, teachers, doctors, politicians, etc. Advocacy, not Adversary! |
